In a race that pitted two big performers from the Belmont Stakes card against each other, the $100,000 Dwyer Stakes (III) did not fail to impress as New York-bred Fish Trappe Road rallied late to score by 1 1/4 lengths for his first graded stakes victory just weeks after falling short in the Woody Stephens Stakes (II).
Breaking from the far-outside post, jockey Luis Saez positioned the big gray son of Trappe Shot behind favored Economic Model while pacesetters Laoban and 65-1 longshot The Great Whiteway set the early opening quarter in :23.35 with the half up in a solid :46.67. As the field turned for home in the stretch of the one-mile dirt race, Fish Trappe Road began to roll much like he did in the Woody Stephens (II), overtaking the leaders while holding back Economic Model to score owner Martin Racing Stable its first graded stakes victory at 7-2 odds in a time of 1:34.84.
“Very nice trip,” said Saez. “He broke good. He usually breaks very quick and fights you the whole time. But today, he was so relaxed. He was perfect and he finished strong.”
The connections of the winning colt had reason to be optimistic about this particular race, especially following a break-out runner-up showing last out when the horse was sent out at 25-1 odds.
“When the post positions came out, I felt really, really good,” said winning trainer Bret Calhoun. “It gave us a lot of options out there. He didn’t have to be pushed. Luis rode him perfectly. I’ve been playing this race out in my head for a couple of days since it was drawn, and it played out exactly the way I thought it would. He’s matured a lot. He was a big kid at 2, played 24-7 – now, it’s all just coming together mentally and physically.”
Calhoun indicated that the New York-bred will remain in-state this summer, with a possible target race at Saratoga Race Course next. The $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (II) at 1 1/8 miles on July 30 as well as the $500,000 King’s Bishop (I) later on August 27 were mentioned as potential next-out races.
Paying $8.70 for a $2 win wager, Fish Trappe Road now owns three wins and three seconds in nine starts and over $500,000 in earnings. Easy Goer Stakes winner Economic Model was second followed closely by Tale of S’avall. Voluntario, Laoban, Unbridled Outlaw, Swipe, and The Great Whiteway completed the order of finish.
