Who runs this blog?
Hello and welcome to New York Racehorse! My name is Dawna and I am the voice, heart, and soul of this blog. You can often find me along the rail with my big brown backpack and DSLR camera at the races, and I’m happy to say I’ve met quite a few “followers” at the track already!
What is your experience with horse racing?
I unfortunately did not grow up in a racing-oriented family, so unlike many others who are working in the industry, I have had to learn about racehorses piece by piece, and I am still learning a lot about everything. On the other hand, I think this makes me an even better and more committed blogger and I am keen to take advantage of every opportunity.
My first racetrack experience was spending my 21st birthday at Calder Race Course while I was attending art school in Miami, Florida. Since then, I have attended 8 different racetracks, attended 4 runnings of the Belmont Stakes– including American Pharoah’s Triple Crown!– and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, and visited many farms in New York state as well as in Kentucky. I am also a dedicated handicapper, having picked big winners ranging from Calidioscopio in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon to Believe You Can in the Kentucky Oaks.
As a Communications Media major at Fitchburg State University, much of my documentary filmmaking focus was on racehorses. My intermediate doc project about the retired stakes winner-turned-eventer Stud Muffin received high praise as well as my advanced thesis Roughshod, which talks about the role and purpose of the horse in the 21st century and features racing organizations such as Old Friends. You can see some of my work at StudioGulch.com.
I have tons of them, as anyone else! My current favorites who are actively training are Juba, Songbird, Lady Eli, Onus, and Little Mike. Most people who know me associate me with Juba, Moreno, and Dayatthespa for my unparalleled fangirling.
I also love love love Zenyatta, Man o’ War, Game On Dude, Winter Memories, Big Brown, Awesome Feather, Union Rags, Blind Luck, Exterminator, Seattle Slew, Tiznow, To Honor and Serve, Funny Cide, Tackleberry, Cigar, Well Armed, Tapit, Honor Code, Main Sequence, and Shared Belief.
Can I use your stuff?
